DIY Toys For Your Kids to Keep Them Happy During the Lockdown
Adults can still understand the seriousness of this situation and be calm. But kids may not remain calm during long lockdown days. If kids don’t get to go out to school and don’t get enough playtime outdoors, they’ll get restless. No matter how delicious and interesting dishes you cook, how many TV shows you keep them glued on to, or spend family time, they will miss going out. Another way to keep them happy and occupied is by giving them new toys. You may not get to go out to buy new toys, and even if you do, toys are so expensive. So the only solution is to make interesting toys at home. Here are some DIY toys you can make easily.
Flexicubes
Arrange your blocks into a square shape. Mark the block faces A-A, B-B, and C-C. These are your “hinges.” Make your first hinge by taping faces C-C together. You want the tape to cover the hinge point and wrap around the adjacent block face. To give the hinge some room to flex, place a credit card between the blocks as you tape. This will provide a small space between the blocks and allow them to flex more easily. Reinforce the hinge point by flipping the hinge over and taping the other side with a 3” strip of duct tape. Again slip a credit card in between the joint to create some wiggle room for the hinge to open completely. Repeat these hinges for faces A-A and B-B. The basic puzzle is complete. To give it extra color cover the remaining visible block faces with duct tape.
Decotropes
Print out the template. Decorate/color the circular areas. Fold along center dotted line. Cut out each decotrope while folded. Open and flip over. Tape skewer along inside at centerline. Burnish the tape to the skewer and paper. If the skewer is not securely fixed to the paper, decotrope will not spin correctly. Glue inside faces together. Let dry. If you don’t the glue will go flying!
Spinning Tops
Make your top by arranging Perler beads in a circular shape on the grid board. Leave the center open. Make the top 3-4 rows wide from the center point. When your design is done, you can iron the Perler beads according to the package directions. You will lay a sheet of ironing paper over the beads and then iron them to fuse the plastic together. Turn the beads over and repeat to fuse. Make sure you don’t iron it so much that your center hole disappears. Cut your skewer about 2” from the bottom using a sharp pair of scissors. Place the short skewer section through the center hole of the Perler bead top. You will want to thread it about ¾” from the pointed end of the skewer. Adjust the disc so that it is level.
Tetris Puzzle
Print template on an 8 1/2 X 11 magnetic sheet. Cut out magnetic pieces & frame. Cut along THICK black lines only. Place on a metal surface. Print the Game Board on a thin sheet of paper and tape to the refrigerator or other metal surfaces.
Newton’s Cradle
Glue (4) craft sticks together at the corners to make a square. Repeat with (4) more crafts sticks. Let dry. These will be the sides of the frame. Cut string into (6) equal pieces approximately 8” long. Hot glue a marble to the center of one of the pieces of string. Repeat to end up with (6) separate marbles, each glued to the center of a string. Make (6) marks along with two craft sticks every ½”. Make sure the marks are centered on the sticks. Tape one end of the strings with marbles attached along with one of the craft sticks at each mark. Set aside. Using hot glue, assemble the frame. Take the two sides and hot glue a craft stick perpendicular to each corner. The final frame will be a cube. Glue the craft stick with the taped string/marbles to one side of the frame. Glue the second marked craft stick to the opposite side of the frame. Tape the loose end of each string with a marble attached to the marked craft stick. Pull strings gently to make sure the marbles align. The marbles must line up both horizontally and when viewed from the top. Pull one of the end marbles up and let go! Watch what happens!
Mutant Toys
Place all the toy parts (preferably plastic and rubber) in a tray or on the table so the kids can sort through them. Use the pieces as is or trim toys to use certain parts. Use hot-glue gun to assemble the new toy figurines together. Use these toys to create a new wonderland or whatever your kid wishes to.
Zappy Zoomers
Cut card stock. For each Zoomer, you will need (1) 1″ x 9 1/2″ piece and (1) 1″ x 5″ piece of card stock. Tape the card stock into a circle. Cut your straws just below the bend or approximately 5 1/2″ long. Tape your straws to the inside edge of the big circle. They should be taped roughly at 12, 3, 6 and 9 o’clock positions. Tape the upper end of the straws onto the outer edge of the small circle in the same 12, 3, 6 and 9 o’clock positions. If you are using decorative tape add it now! We taped everything, including the straws. Hot glue the straws to the card stock.
Paper Houses
Download and print out your templates on card stock. Decorate the house while the template is uncut and flat. Using scissors, cut your template along the solid lines. Adults can cut out the solid black areas with an Exacto knife. Fold your template along the dotted lines. Tape or glue the tabs to the model. We suggest taping for a quick build! You’re done!
Make sure you make these and have fun with your kids. Keep them occupied, and the situation will be less difficult to deal with.
